I'm an architect based in Berlin. This site functions as a container for some of the curatorial, teaching and writing projects my practice has branched into. Please look here for a formal bio, or read the blurb at the end for a very short version.
Growing up between Ljubljana and Vienna, I saw distinct cultures and political systems morph into a somewhat united Europe. As an adult, I moved to New York City and lived there for a decade before settling in Berlin. Understanding architecture as deeply entangled and inherently complicit in the systems it inhabits, I am actively engaged in building a more sustainable and equitable practice. In my research I am particularly interested in how technology is entangled with the built and the so-called natural environment.
Building
I am currently running the architectural design practice Some Place Studio, focused on exploring technical aspects and aesthetics of sustainability. We're looking at the entire lifecycle of structures and prefer to reuse instead of rebuild. The studio is working on buildings, interiors and exhibition design.
Curating
I have recently co-curated the exhibition /imagine: A Journey into the New Virtual at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna along with Marlies Wirth. In New York, I co-founded the DIY gallery HOT AIR with Matt Shaw. We curated and produced a number of shows in vacant commercial spaces in downtown New York, including the large-scale exhibtion Fidi Arsenale.
Teaching
I am currently offering courses on virtual spaces and exhibition making at NODE Center for Curatorial Studies. I have taught architectural design studios and seminars at Columbia GSAPP, The Yale School of Architecture and The City College of New York. Much of my research and work there has been revolving around concepts of replicas, copies, 3d scanning and associated questions of preservation, authorship and copyright. For recorded lectures on various topics check out this archive.
Writing
Some recent writing includes an article on architects and their role in the metaverse for HEAD Geneve, an op-ed on hybrid architectural education in the Architects Newspaper and an essay on 3d scanning and the tactility of virtual models for Madame Architect.
Press
Check out some recent features on my work in the Japanese Axis Magazine, or an interview in the Austrian paper Architektur Aktuell. Also, here is a review of the exhibition I co-curated at the MAK in Vienna in the Guardian by Oliver Wainwright and another take in the Architects Newspaper by Sam Jacob.
I post irregular updates on what I am reading or doing on are.na and instagram and I welcome messages through email (bika@someplace.studio)
