hello!

I'm an architect based in Berlin. This site functions as a container for some of the curatorial, teaching and writing projects my practice has branched into. Please look here for a formal bio, or read the blurb at the end for a very short version.

Growing up between Ljubljana and Vienna, I saw distinct cultures and political systems morph into a somewhat united Europe. As an adult, I moved to New York City and lived there for a decade before settling in Berlin. Understanding architecture as deeply entangled and inherently complicit in the systems it inhabits, I am actively engaged in building a more sustainable and equitable practice. In my research I am particularly interested in how technology is entangled with the built and the so-called natural environment.

Building
I am the founder and creative lead of Some Place Studio Architects, based in Berlin and Vienna. The studio works across buildings, interiors and exhibition design, with a focus on adaptive reuse and the transformation of existing structures. We are interested in the technical, environmental and aesthetic dimensions of sustainability, looking at the entire lifecycle of buildings and preferring to reuse rather than rebuild. Our winning competition proposal for Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin reflects this approach.

Curating
I have co-curated the symposim  Black Box White Cube XR at Hellerau under the topic: Technoromanticism: Exploring the Sublime in the Digital Age. Previously I have co-curated the exhibition /imagine: A Journey into the New Virtual at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna along with Marlies Wirth. In New York, I co-founded the DIY gallery HOT AIR with Matt Shaw. We curated and produced a number of shows in vacant commercial spaces in downtown New York, including the large-scale exhibtion Fidi Arsenale

Teaching
I am currently offering courses on virtual spaces and exhibition design at NODE Center for Curatorial Studies. I have taught architectural design studios and seminars at Columbia GSAPP, The Yale School of Architecture and The City College of New York. Much of my research and work there has been revolving around concepts of replicas, copies, 3d scanning and associated questions of preservation, authorship and copyright.

Writing
I edited a book on the winning competition entry for Tempelhofer Feld that can be downloaded here. Other writing includes an article on architects and their role in the metaverse for HEAD Geneve, an op-ed on hybrid architectural education in the Architects Newspaper and an essay on 3d scanning and the tactility of virtual models for Madame Architect

Press
Recent interviews include a feature in Outsider magazine, in Stylepark and in Madame Architect.

I post irregular updates on what I am reading or doing on instagram and I welcome messages through email (bika@someplace.studio)
